This document can be used by the owner of intellectual property rights, patent, trademark or other property rights to clarify their right to payment for use of the property by another individual or company.
Royalty is the Compensation received for the right to use certain property interests, such as copyrighted works and patented inventions. A Royalty might be an amount per unit sold or a percentage of the profits generated by using the property by the Grantee. In some cases it might be both. Authors, songwriters, composers, playwrights, and inventors usually own the rights over their work (intellectual property in the work created). These intellectual property owners turn to businesses to market their property. When a business obtains the right to market the creation, the creator usually receives compensation in the form of a royalty. A royalty example is part of the example that the creator of the work negotiates with the business that seeks to use the creation. The property owner has the right to make an independent accounting of the business records to ensure that the figures upon which the royalty is based are accurate.
